What is a prefold diaper?
A prefold diaper is a rectangular diaper that has more layers in the middle and fewer layers on the sides. Prefolds are wonderful diapers: versatile, absorbent, long lasting, multi-use, and very affordable. Although they are labeled as "prefolds" they still require some degree of folding before being able to use them as a diaper. Most often they are secured with a diaper pin or a Snappi, but they can also be folded in thirds and used as an insert without any pins.
Prefold diapers are labeled according to their layers - 2x6x2, 4x6x4 or 4x8x4. These numbers correspond with the number of layers in each panel of the prefold diaper (the smaller number represents the outer panels and the larger number represent the more absorbent center panel).
Using prefolds is considered the most economical option - with as little as $200 from infant to potty training! They can also be used for many years - whether they are used on multiple children or recycled and used for rags and burp cloths.
